Porcelain tooth crowns

Dental crowns are artificial covers with the appearance and shape of natural teeth, permanently attached to the patient’s properly prepared teeth or special frameworks. This type of procedure is most often used in the case of significant damage and discoloration of the teeth, which cannot be effectively treated using traditional methods, such as filling cavities in the enamel or removing tartar. The material from which crowns are made depends on the individual needs of the patient. Ceramics, i.e. porcelain, are often preferred, in which case we talk colloquially about porcelain crowns, which faithfully reproduce the natural appearance of the teeth in the patient’s mouth. The category of porcelain crowns includes various types, depending on specific needs and situations.

1. all-ceramic crowns – these crowns are fully made of ceramics, which guarantees an attractive visual effect; they are practically indistinguishable from natural teeth in terms of aesthetics.
2. porcelain crowns on a metal base – they are characterized by solid, durable workmanship and an attractive price, however, some people may experience allergic reactions to metals such as chrome, nickel or cobalt.
3. acrylic crowns – serve as temporary crowns, for example during dental treatment or during the process of making permanent crowns. Unfortunately, they are not durable in the long run.
4. porcelain crowns with a zirconium oxide base – zirconium oxide is a much more resistant and durable material than metal, and is also highly resistant to chemicals. Moreover, it retains its white, crystalline structure and does not cause allergic reactions.

The choice of the type of crown in our clinic is tailored to the individual needs of each patient and the expected results. There are no significant differences in the effectiveness of different methods. All of them are equally effective in getting rid of the problem of damaged and unsightly teeth. Even in the case of patients whose teeth are in very poor condition, fears related to the procedure of installing crowns are completely unjustified, because it is neither difficult nor painful. The only inconvenience is the need for several visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist determines the degree of damage to the teeth, grinds them appropriately, and removes the damaged enamel. Of course, the patient receives anesthesia beforehand. Additionally, it is necessary to retract the gums to allow an impression of the jaw to be taken. This is achieved by using a retraction cord that is placed in the gum pocket. This makes it easier to adapt the impression material to each tooth. Then, this impression must be repeated, but without moving the gums, to reproduce the natural appearance of the teeth as closely as possible. The next step is for the doctor to assess the size of the porcelain or other crown, its color and type of material. When rebuilding molars, porcelain crowns on a metal base or crowns made of zirconium are often used. For front teeth, all-ceramic crowns are recommended to achieve the best possible aesthetic effect.

In the case of a natural tooth, it is necessary to grind it properly so that the crown placed on it is consistent with the appearance of the tooth and fits perfectly between the adjacent teeth.
